I have been hearing a lot of people saying that it's striking and wrestling. Others talk about how Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu are the best techniques to have. I haven't been training MMA too long, but I was curious what everyone thinks is the best fundamental technique to rely on???

To properly answer this question one has to know what the rules are for the MMA event. The rules will dictate what techniques can win a fight. Events like the UFC favor stand up over ground fighting. Fights are allowed to last forever if they stay on the feet, regardless of how boring, or brutal. If the fight stays on the ground too long the referee stands the fighters up. For a Jiu Jitsu player this makes it hard to use some of the skills he develops in training his art. Time limits also determine strategy. In an event like the UFC the five minute time limits make it hard for two top competitors to make good progress on the ground in the round before an interruption (end of round) occurs. As a result of these things a fighter with good wrestling and good striking can do very well in events like the UFC, even though he lacks submission skills.

There is no really one thing to rely on anymore. Unless, you are super super good on that. Because other fighters are improving their game from every situation, so ou can not focus on only one thing. Lets say, you are a very good Jiu jitsu guy, but your opponent is a mix of wrestling and boxing, so in the end you will not be able to take him down to submit. The same applies if you are a good boxer, but the guy is an excellent wrestler and knows jiu jitsu.

I agree with that explanation as well.
